Karin Crona (1968), a Swedish artist living in Paris since 1999, received an MFA from Konstfack, University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. The technique of automatic writing is part of her daily art practice, which is inspired by outsider art, graphic novels and cinema. Since 2017, she has been searching for and collecting "Pénéla", the first French women's monthly magazine to be found in libraries, published between 1967 and 1973. The "Pénéla" Archives, a body of photocollages created from this collection, is deployed in several series, artists' books and murals, focusing on the evolution of the female figure and the feminine condition. Her artistic research extends across a range of media, including photography, drawing, engraving and textile sculpture. The themes of autobiography and stereotypes present in her work have recently converged with the question of how AI generates images.
Nominated for the HSBC Prize in 2018, Karin Crona was also exhibited the same year at the festival Circulation(s) at the Centquatre and the Swedish Institute in Paris. Selected for the Biennale d'Issy in Issy-les-Moulineaux in 2017, 2019 and 2021, her work is regularly published. Recently, her series of photo-collages and drawings have been presented by the Susanne Pettersson/SPG Backstage gallery in Stockholm (Sweden) and OpenBach in Paris. At the invitation of the Fondation d'entreprise Ricard, the generative performance "The Uncut Version" was presented at Jeune Création 2020 at the Fondation Fiminco. In 2023, she joins the La Générale artist residency in Paris and moves into the Be-Cosmo artist studios.

La technique de l’écriture automatique l’inscrit dans une pratique artistique quotidienne, s’inspirant de l’art brut, du roman graphique et du cinéma. Depuis 2017, elle recherche et collecte “Pénéla”, premier mensuel féminin français de bibliothèque paru entre 1967et 1973. Les archives "Pénéla", corpus de photocollages réalisé à partir de cette collection, se déploie en plusieurs séries, livres d’artistes et installations murales, autour de l’évolution de la figure et de la condition féminine. Nominée pour le Prix HSBC en 2018, Karin Crona a également exposé la même année au Festival Circulation(s) au Centquatre et à l’Institut suédois à Paris.
